Why Does diib Say I Have an SSL Certificate Issue When I Know it is Valid?

If you're seeing an "Issue Detected" notification related to your SSL certificate in your diib dashboard, this article will help you understand why this alert appears and what it means for your website.

Why diib Flags SSL Certificate Issues

diib continuously monitors your website for potential technical problems that could impact your SEO and user experience. SSL certificates are a critical component of website security and search engine rankings, which is why we include them in our monitoring.

There are two main reasons our system might detect an SSL issue:

1. Your SSL Certificate is Approaching Its Expiration Date

SSL certificates have built-in expiration dates that are publicly visible to anyone who connects to your website. When someone visits your site, your server automatically shares your SSL certificate information, which includes a "Valid From" date and a "Valid Until" date. Our scanning tool reads these dates and calculates how much time is left before your certificate expires.

Important to know: Even if you paid for a multi-year SSL subscription, the actual certificate installed on your website has a much shorter lifespan - typically 90 days to 13 months maximum. This is a security standard enforced by web browsers, regardless of how long your subscription lasts.

Think of it like renewing your driver's license - you might have the right to drive for years, but your physical license card needs to be updated regularly. Our dashboard detects when your certificate is getting close to expiration so you can renew it before it causes problems for your visitors.

2. Your SSL Certificate May Have a Configuration Issue

Sometimes an SSL certificate is technically valid but isn't set up according to current best practices. Common configuration issues include:

  • Outdated security protocols
  • Missing intermediate certificates
  • Weak encryption settings
  • Hostname mismatches
  • Other technical settings that browsers and search engines check for

These issues can impact both your site's security and your SEO performance, even if your certificate itself is valid.

What Should You Do?

If you see an SSL certificate alert in your diib dashboard:

  1. Share the alert with your web developer or hosting provider - They can verify the specific details we're flagging and address any issues.
  2. Check your certificate's expiration date - Your hosting provider or SSL certificate provider can tell you when renewal is due.
  3. Verify your SSL configuration - Your developer can run additional tests to ensure everything is set up correctly.
  4. If you've already investigated and confirmed everything is fine - You're all set and can disregard the notification.
